The Anadarko Petroleum group on Wednesday resumed its activities in the north of Mozambique for the exploration of natural gas deposits in the Area 1 Block of the Rovuma basin, the group’s chief executive said on Tuesday in Maputo.

Al Walker, who announced the decision at the end of an audience with the President of Mozambique, said Filipe Nyusi had given guarantees of the security needed to resume activities, according to Mozambican state news agency AIM.

The group decided to suspend activities last February after an armed attack occurred in the region of Palma, in Cabo Delgado province, which killed one worker and injured six others.

The deceased was an employee of Portuguese construction group Gabriel Couto, which was hired in October 2018 to build an airfield in Afungi, a peninsula in that northern province of Mozambique.

Walker said he had travelled to Mozambique to find out more about the current status of the project, recalled that there are firm buyers in place for the natural gas to be extracted and said additional details would be given in June when the final investment decision is made.

Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Max Tonela, who was present at the audience with the President of the Republic, added that the final investment decision will be made at a ceremony to be held in Maputo before 20 June.

The Area 1 block is operated by Anadarko Mozambique Area 1, Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Anadarko Petroleum group, with a 26.5% stake, ENH Rovuma Area One, a subsidiary of state-owned Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, with 15%, Mitsui E&P Mozambique Area1 Ltd.(20%), ONGC Videsh Ltd. (10%), Beas Rovuma Energy Mozambique Limited (10%), BPRL Ventures Mozambique BV (10%), and PTTEP Mozambique Area 1 Limited (8.5%).
