Angola’s National Statistics Institute (INE) has launched a pilot phase of the Census of Agriculture and Fisheries (RAPP) 2018-2019 in Ondjiva, Cunene province, an official said on Tuesday.

The coordinator of the Provincial Office of the Census of Agriculture and Fisheries in Cunene, Pedro Tibério Tutaleni, also said that the pilot census, which will last two months, involves 14 technicians working in 48 villages located in two municipalities.

Tutaleni said that the objective of conducting the pilot census is to test operational conditions and correct some organisational errors so that there will be no problems when the data collection is complete.

It is estimated that in the two municipalities covered by the pilot census there are 470,000 heads of cattle, including 350,000 in Cuanhama and 120,000 in Cahama, according to the Angop news agency.

These small statistical operations are being carried out in other provinces, such as Moxico, and will gradually be extended to other regions of the country, such as Uíge, Benguela and Kwanza Sul.

The 2018/2019 Agriculture and Fisheries Census, which is an exhaustive statistical operation, will cover the whole agro-cattle and fishery sector, focusing on the number of agro-livestock units, distribution, type of property, land use, ownership and use of means of production and technology employed.

The census will be coordinated by the National Statistics Institute, assisted by the Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry and Fisheries and the Sea, with technical support from the United Nations Fund for Agriculture.
