São Paulo plans to open a commercial office in Shanghai, the governor of the Brazilian state announced on Tuesday, after an audience with the Chinese ambassador to Brazil, Yang Wanming, Agência Brasil reported.

João Dória said that the office in Shanghai will be inaugurated next August, as part of a trip to China of a state mission from 3 to 10 August, which will start in Beijing and end in Shanghai.

The state governor said that the opening of a permanent office is intended to facilitate the promotion of trade, investment and exchange in areas such as agribusiness, infrastructure and transport.

This will be the first commercial office of the state outside the country and, according to the government, the initiative is expected to be extended to other Chinese cities.

Dória recalled that Shanghai is the business capital of China and said that the meeting with the ambassador had been used to establish the cooperation agreements to be signed in August in China in the areas of agribusiness, technology, infrastructure, logistics and transport, health, economic development, energy and tourism.

Dória said that the mission travelling to China will present the state government’s privatisation programmes, including railways, roads, airports and ports, including the port of São Sebastião.

“China is Brazil’s main trading partner, and Chinese investment in Brazil over the next few years is expected to grow substantially, specifically in São Paulo, which is already the main destination for Chinese investments in Brazil in various sectors,” said the governor.

Doria added that “in the coming months we will announce new investments by Chinese companies in the state of São Paulo.”
