The Mozambican government has launched an international public tender to hire a consulting firm to support a strategy for the development of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project, according to official information.

The public tender launched by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy is intended to secure the services of a company that will assist the Mozambican government in designing the strategy for legal and financial structuring of the energy project, including the energy transport system and related facilities.

The ministry also said in a statement that the selected company will work with the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office, created by Ministerial Diploma last February, throughout the process of resolving outstanding issues related to the current concession.

“The selection of consultants will be made through a competitive international contracting process, with competing companies having proven experience in carrying out similar work with the same complexity,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy also announced the launch of the tender to hire the director of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project, who will be responsible for coordinating the activities for the development of the project, including the daily management of the respective office.

The plan for construction of Mphanda Nkuwa was approved in September 2007 and has since been handed over to several partnerships but never carried out, with current President Filipe Nyusi announcing in August 2018 that Electricidade de Moçambique and Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) had been charged with reviving the project.
