A project to produce solar energy, estimated at US$33 million, will begin construction in the province of Namibe in 2020, the chairman of Angolan oil company Sonangol, Carlos Saturnino, announced on Monday in Luanda.

The project will have the capacity to produce 100 megawatts of electricity, and in the first phase, it will produce just 25 megawatts.

Saturnino, speaking at a press conference on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the company, revealed that economic feasibility studies had already been carried out.

He also said that the initiative followed the identification of a corridor between the provinces of Namibe and Huíla, where there are more hours of sun and the need for electricity is adapted to the initial production capacity of this project.

The chairman of Sonangol noted that the construction of this project will bring an added benefit in terms of reducing diesel consumption.
