External Merchandise Trade Statistics for June 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise import fell by 21.6% year-on-year to MOP5.10 billion in June 2020, of which imports of Gold jewellery, Watches and Mobile phones declined by 86.6%, 71.9% and 33.1% respectively, but those of Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products rose by 33.9%. Total merchandise export amounted to MOP776 million, down by 14.3% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP649 million) went down by 18.1%, with that of Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products falling by 66.8%. Meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP128 million) grew by 12.7%, with that of Garments soaring by 1,504.8%. Merchandise trade deficit in June totalled MOP4.33 billion.

In the second quarter of 2020, total value of merchandise export (MOP2.10 billion) and merchandise import (MOP13.23 billion) declined by 23.9% and 35.5% respectively year-on-year, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP11.12 billion

In the first half year of 2020, total value of merchandise export decreased by 19.5% year-on-year to MOP5.16 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP4.46 billion) dropped by 22.2% but that of domestic exports (MOP697 million) grew by 3.5%. Total value of merchandise import declined by 29.2% year-on-year to MOP29.66 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP24.50 billion for the first half year of 2020, down by MOP11.01 billion from MOP35.51 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP3.32 billion) fell by 22.4% year-on-year in the first half year of 2020. Meanwhile, exports to mainland China rose by 25.1% to MOP979 million, of which exports to the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP921 million) grew by 22.3%. Exports to the USA (MOP213 million) and the EU (MOP102 million) expanded by 135.7% and 8.4% respectively year-on-year. Besides, exports to the Belt and Road Countries (MOP166 million) rose by 84.5% and exports to the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP9 million) soared by 793.6%. Exports of Textiles & garments grew by 67.9% year-on-year to MOP780 million, while exports of Non-textiles went down by 26.3% to MOP4.38 billion.
By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP10.86 billion) and the EU (MOP7.78 billion) decreased by 22.4% and 31.9% respectively year-on-year in the first half year of 2020. Besides, imports from the Belt and Road Countries (MOP5.73 billion) and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP341 million) shrank by 8.6% and 21.0% respectively. Analysed by place of consignment, merchandise import from mainland China slid by 13.8% year-on-year to MOP5.66 billion, of which imports from the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP5.56 billion) fell by 13.0%. Imports of Consumer goods went down by 33.5% to MOP19.34 billion, with imports of Watches (MOP1.42 billion) and Gold jewellery (MOP1.05 billion) falling by 56.2% and 64.2% respectively. Imports of Fuels & lubricants (MOP2.56 billion) and Mobile phones (MOP1.09 billion) declined by 24.8% and 54.8% respectively, whereas imports of Construction materials (MOP816 million) rose by 10.4%.

External merchandise trade totalled MOP34.82 billion in the first half year of 2020, down by 27.9% compared with MOP48.32 billion a year earlier.
