Hotels and Similar Establishments Survey 2019

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 123 hotels & guesthouses operating in 2019, an increase of 7 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged went up by 2.1% to 51,859. Attributable to a 1.0% rise in number of guests, receipts of the sector grew by 2.6% year-on-year to MOP 38.27 billion. Expenditure of the sector rose by 2.9% to MOP 33.77 billion, of which Operating Expenses (MOP 15.07 billion), Compensation of Employees (MOP 14.92 billion) and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP 3.78 billion) recorded year-on-year increases.

Analysed by classification, receipts of 5-star hotels (36 establishments, an increase of 1) grew by 3.6% year-on-year to MOP 30.08 billion; those generated from Room Sales (MOP 13.61 billion), Rentals of Space (MOP 7.42 billion) and provision of Food & Beverages (MOP 6.77 billion) expanded by 4.2%, 4.2% and 6.3% respectively. Likewise, receipts of 3-star hotels (remaining unchanged at 16 establishments) increased by 3.0% to MOP 3.73 billion, of which those from Room Sales (MOP 1.68 billion) went up by 2.9% year-on-year. However, receipts of 4-star hotels (staying at 17 establishments) dropped by 4.1% to MOP 4.21 billion, with those from Room Sales (MOP 2.16 billion) and Rentals of Space (MOP 357 million) falling by 8.5% and 12.5% year-on-year respectively. Receipts of 2-star hotels (15 establishments, an increase of 1) went down by 0.6% to MOP 149 million. Meanwhile, Non-operating Receipts of hotels (including interest received and insurance claims) tumbled by 71.3% year-on-year to MOP 148 million in 2019, as most of the insurance claims for damages caused by the catastrophic typhoons in 2017 and 2018 had been settled in 2018.

As regards expenditure, 5-star hotels incurred MOP 27.10 billion in expenditure, up by 3.8% year-on-year; Compensation of Employees (MOP 12.20 billion) and Operating Expenses (MOP 11.89 billion) saw respective growth of 4.4% and 3.0%. Expenditure of 3-star hotels went up by 1.0% year-on-year to MOP 2.70 billion, of which Compensation of Employees (MOP 1.32 billion) rose by 3.0% while Operating Expenses (MOP 1.07 billion) dropped by 2.9%. Expenditure of 2-star hotels totalled MOP 146 million, a rise of 3.5% year-on-year. On the other hand, expenditure of 4-star hotels fell by 2.5% to MOP 3.75 billion, with Operating Expenses (MOP 1.99 billion) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 1.31 billion) reducing by 3.6% and 2.5% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, Non-operating Expenses of these hotels (including depreciation and interest paid) amounted to MOP 16.20 billion, up by 6.0% year-on-year.

A total of 39 guesthouses were operating in 2019, an increase of 5 year-on-year. Receipts and Expenditure of these guesthouses totalled MOP 88.62 million and MOP 69.01 million  respectively,  representing respective growth of 10.5% and 32.2% year-on-year.

Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy amounted to MOP 19.44 billion, up by 3.4% year-on-year; Average Value Added per Person Engaged went up by 1.3% to MOP 0.38 million. Gross Surplus of the sector expanded by 2.6% year-on-year to MOP 4.53 billion. Both Gross Surplus Ratio (11.8%) and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (13.4%) remained flat year-on-year. On the other  hand,  Gross Fixed  Capital  Formation of the sector slid by 76.1% year-on-year to MOP 6.82 billion owing to the completion of some large-scale 5-star hotels in 2018.
