MACAO BUSINESS DELEGATION ATTENDS THE 12TH CHINA INTERNATIONAL FAIR FOR INVESTMENT AND TRADE IN XIAMEN

The 12th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), organised by Ministry of Commerce of PRC, co-organised by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, International Finance Corporation, World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies and China International Investment Promotion Agency, with Macao SAR Government as one of the members of the organising committee, was held from 8 to 11 September in Xiamen.

“Macao Trade and Investment Fair” and “CIFIT” became partner Fairs. By the invitation of the organiser, IPIM convened a delegation of 91 entrepreneurs from Macao to participate in the event, from 7 to 9 September, where IPIM set up a 108 square metres Macao Pavilion. Apart from the IPIM booth, the Associação das Ourivesarias de Macau, Tan Heong San Enterprise Limited and Macau AoXing Investment Co.Ltd. also set up booths to showcase their products and services.

During the Fair, the Supporting Office to the Secretariat of China and Portuguese - Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Co-operation Forum (Macao), IPIM, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Portugal set up a “Portuguese–speaking Countries Pavilion” covering an area of 360 square metres.

This year the participants of the business matching were enthusiastic and were sucessfull. Statistics show more than 55,000 overseas professional investors and traders participated in the event and 784 investment projects were signed, totalling an investment of US$ 15.903 billion. The total number of booths exceeded 2,500 and the exhibition area surpassed 52,000 square metres, giving CIFIT the best record since its inception.

EXPLORING ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION WITH EAST TIMOR

Mr. Zacarias Albano da Costa, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Co-operation for the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (also known as East Timor) visited Macao from 3 to 6 August and gave an introduction to East Timor’s current economic environment, particularly the developments in tourism, infrastructure, fishery and banking. The objective of this visit was to explore economic co-operation opportunities between Macao and East Timor with local political and business communities.

Mr. Zacarias Albano da Costa and representatives from Macao business communities attended the “East Timor Foreign Minister and Macao Entrepreneurs Seminar” held by IPIM on 4 August. At the Seminar, he stated that East Timor was looking forward to strengthening co-operation with Macao on tourism, education and investment. To further enhance liaison and learn from Macao’s experience in these sectors, East Timor is planning to establish a consulate in the city, with its Ministry of Economic Development planning to arrange representatives to visit Macao and take part in large-scale trade promotion activities.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNICATION WITH ROMANIA

Mr. Eduard Goean, Consul- General of Romania to Hong Kong and Macao, visited IPIM on 1 August and was welcomed by Mr. Lee Peng Hong, IPIM’s President.

During the meeting, Mr. Goean briefly introduced the latest developments in Romania and said that the Consulate- General of Romania to Hong Kong and Macao would be re-opened in September this year. The Consulate General is responsible for the tasks in southern China. A new Economic Office would be set up to promote trade and investment co-operation between southern China and Romania.

Mr. Lee expressed support for Romanian trade and economic activities held in Macao and neighbouring regions and introduced various events to be held in Macao during the second half of the year, including the IPIM-organised 13th MIF and the Wine and Gourmet Asia 2008 which is supported by IPIM.

MACAU ASSOCIATION OF CHINESE MEDICINE VISITS IPIM

A delegation of six from the Macau Association of Chinese Medicine (MACM), headed by Chairperson Mr. Lam Iat Cho, visited IPIM on 21 August and was received by the President Mr. Lee Peng Hong. During the meeting, Mr. Lam gave a presentation on the World Congress of Chinese Medicine, Macau 2008, which will be held from 14 to 17 October at the The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel. Mr. Lee expressed IPIM’s support for MACM for their active participation and organisation of conferences and exhibitions. Mr. Lee contributed some suggestions on how to strengthen liaison between the Chinese medicine and convention and exhibition industries.

IPIM ATTENDS THE “CHAOZHOU INVESTMENT ENVIRONMENT FAIR”


Chaozhou Investment Environment Fair

The Chaozhou Investment Environment Fair, organised by the People’s Government of Chaozhou and supported by the ChaozhouNatives Association of Macao and IPIM, was held in the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre on 5 July.

Mr. Chen Jianxin, Vice Mayor of the People’s Government of Chaozhou, briefed Macao’s entrepreneurs on the city’s investment environment and strengths, with an aim of familiarising them with up-to-date information on Chaozhou through the event. Mr. Chen said that the focus of the municipal government delegation visit was to strengthen economic communication and broaden the range and horizons of co-operation between the two regions. It is also hoped that they will be able to make use of Macao as a bridge and hub to attract foreign investment.

Guests at the Fair included Mr. Lee Peng Hong, IPIM’s President, Mr. Xu Chaosheng, Deputy Chief of the Co-ordination Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Mr. Bian Chungang, Director-General of the Department of General Affairs of Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macau SAR, Mr. Vitor Ng, Chairman of Macao Foundation and Mr. Hoi Sai Iun, President of Board of Directors of Macao Chamber of Commerce.

IPIM SUPPORTS STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE GUANGZHOU DELEGATION

A delegation led by Mr. Tang Hanghao, Deputy Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality, was received by Executive Director Mr. Jackson Chang when they visited IPIM on 29 August.

The objective of the delegation’s visit was to study the overall situation of Macao and the standards of business practices, industry rules and regulations adopted by Macao in accordance with the requirements for international development, with the ultimate goal of strengthening liaisons and co-operation between Guangzhou and Macao. Mr. Chang briefed the delegation on Macao’s latest economic situation and both parties exchanged views on issues such as measures of Guangzhou and Macao on assisting enterprises develop overseas market and the specific requirements for Guangzhou enterprises to invest in Macao. After the meeting, the delegation visited IPIM’s Macao Business Support Centre and acquired a more thorough understanding on support measures and incentives that IPIM provides to local SMEs.

IPIM’S DELEGATION VISITS BRAZIL AND MOZAMBIQUE TO EXPLORE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES


Seminar on investment opportunities in Macao and Sao Paulo City, Brazil

To capitalise on Macao’s strength as a trade and economic service platform for China and Portuguese-speaking countries and in assisting Macao entrepreneurs to explore new markets, IPIM organised a delegation, led by Executive Director, Ms Echo Chan, to visit Brazil and Mozambique.

During the visit to Brazil, a seminar entitled “Business and Investment Opportunities between Macao and Sao Paulo” was held on 26 August and attended by around 150 Brazilian entrepreneurs. The Sao Paulo Chamber of Commerce announced at the seminar that, following its visit to Macao in December 2007, it planned to set up an office in Macao in the near future, “to assist Brazilian businesspeople interested in starting up new businesses to search for opportunities and explore the best way to tap the Asian market”. After the seminar, the organiser arranged for business negotiations to be held between Macao and Brazilian entrepreneurs. The Macao delegation gained a thorough understanding of the current investment and trade environment in Brazil and was interested in gradually establishing a business network.

On 31 August, the delegation proceeded to Mozambique to attend the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM). The delegation met a number of local trade promotion and business organisations and was received by the Minister of Industry and Trade. The majority of the Macao delegation was from small and medium sized enterprises which were some of the first from Macao to make a foray into the African market. They said that in view of the development of Macao’s market and the increasingly acute competition in the Mainland and Asia-Pacific markets, there is a necessity to explore business opportunities in emerging markets. Macao’s unique cultural and linguistic ties with Portuguese-speaking countries are also the focuses of their visit.

WORKSHOP ON “HOW CAN SMES BECOME FRANCHISEES?” AT SME SERVICE CENTRE

Joinly organised by IPIM and Macau Management Association, the workshop “How can SMEs become Franchisees?” held on 22 August at IPIM’s SME Service Centre (SMEC). Ms. Echo Chan, Executive Director of IPIM and Mr. Lao Weng Seng, Chairman of the Macau Management Association delivered a speech in the workshop.

Mr. Harry Chow, a experienced consultant and Marketing Director of Hong Kong BOSSibe was invited as a special guest speaker and gave a presentation on franchising concepts, operations, management and related issues. Ms. Leong Ka Kei, General Manager of Rainbow Group also gave a themed talk on strategy management, as well as an experience-sharing sessions on running the famous fashion brands.

The workshop is one of a series of activities being organised by IPIM to promote franchising business in Macao. Enterprises who participated in the workshop expressed that the workshop had been very helpful in increasing their knowledge of franchising business.

CHINA TAIPEI CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION DELEGATION VISITS MACAO

The China Taipei Convention and Exhibition delegation of 20 members, organised by the Training Centre of the Taipei World Trade Centre, visited Macao on 10 September and conducted a seminar to exchange views with leading officials of IPIM, Macao Convention and Exhibition Association, Macau Fair and Trade Association and the Association of Advertising Agents of Macau.

The leader of the Taipei Convention and Exhibition delegation was Ms. Tina Chang, Director of Sales & Marketing of K&A International Co., Ltd., members included representatives from government departments, universities, exhibition centres and foreign trade associations etc. Mr. Jackson Chang, IPIM’s Executive Director, Mr. Tony Lam, President of Macau Fair and Trade Association (MFTA), Mr. Alan Ho, President of Board of Directors of Macao Convention & Exhibition Association (MCEA) and Ms. Anita Mak, Secretary-General of the Association of Advertising Agents of Macau met with the delegation for a discussion. Mr. Chang briefed the delegation on Macao’s latest investment environment and the development of convention and exhibition industry. He invited the representatives to take part in the 13th MIF to be held in October this year. Mr. Tony Lam and Mr. Alan Ho spoke on the duties and major achievements of the MFTA and MCEA respectively as well as the current development of Macao’s convention and exhibition industry.

MACAO DELEGATION PARTICIPATES IN “11TH LOGISTICS CHINA IN GUANGZHOU”

Jointly organised by the Logistics Sub-council of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and China Logistics Institute, the 11th Logistics China was held from 26 to 28 August 2008 in the Jinhan Exhibition Centre in Guangzhou.

IPIM organised a delegation of 17 local entrepreneurs to visit Guangzhou and attend the 11th Logistics China on 26 August. The delegation took the chance to study the current developments in the logistics industry in Baiyun District, Guangzhou and also visited the Guangdong Logistics Association. During the visit, Mr. Ma Renhong, Executive Vice-President of Guangdong Logistics Association, introduced the strengths of the transportation network and airport facilities in Baiyun District, as well as the Huangjinwei Logistics Park, the major logistics project being planned and implemented by the Government. Members of the Macao delegation were interested in the project and provided suggestions and opinions.

DELEGATION FROM HUNAN PROVINCE FOR THE “1ST HIGH-LEVEL FORUM OF HUNAN-MACAO CO-OPERATION 2008 VISITS IPIM”

To strengthen communication between Hunan and Macao and promote economic and cultural co-operation among enterprises in Hunan, Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries, the Macao Foundation and the Hunan Provincial Committee of Pacific Economic Cooperation co-organised the 1st High-level Forum of Hunan-Macao Co-operation 2008, which was held in Macao.

To have a better understanding of Macao’s business and investment environment, the Hunan delegation of 27 visited IPIM’s Macao Business Support Centre on 17 September and was received by Ms. Echo Chan, IPIM’s Executive Director. During the meeting, Mr. Tang Zhixiang, Advisor to the People’s Government of Hunan Province and Ex-Deputy Governor of Hunan Province, briefed IPIM on the latest developments in Hunan. He expressed the wish to strengthen the liaison with Macao’s tourism industry and educational institutions, and utilise Macao’s role as a service platform to promote Hunan to countries in the EU, as well as enhance trade and economic communication and co-operation between Macao and Hunan. Ms. Chan welcomed Hunan to organise various trade, economic and investment activities in Macao and also invited the delegation to take part in the forthcoming 13th MIF, organised by IPIM, in October this year.

MACAO DELEGATION PARTICIPATES IN THE CHINA JILIN NORTHEAST ASIA INVESTMENT AND TRADE EXPO AND RELATED ACTIVITIES

The 4th China Jilin Northeast Asia Investment and Trade Expo (the Expo) was held from 2 to 6 September in the Changcun International Exhibition Centre. A 24-member delegation of Macao entrepreneurs, led by Mr. Vong Kok Seng, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Macao Chamber of Commerce, with IPIM’s Executive Director, Mr. Jackson Chang as advisor, visited Changchun City and attended the Expo as well as the World Chinese Entrepreneur Summit Meeting-Northeast Asia Economic Co-operation Forum. IPIM set up a Macao Pavilion which covered an area of 18 square metres to promote Macao’s investment environment, IPIM’s services and the 13th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) to be held in October this year.

The Macao delegation left for Changchun on 31 August. After their arrival, Mr. Jackson Chang and Mr. Vong Kok Seng were received by Mr. Wang Lin, Secretary of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee. During the morning of 1 September, the delegation attended the Opening Ceremony of the World Chinese Entrepreneur Summit Meeting-Northeast Asia Economic Co-operation Forum at the Huatian Hotel in Changchun. Mr. Chang and Mr. Wong also attended the Opening Ceremony of the Expo in the morning of 2 September.
