Successful 19th Asian Trade Promotion Forum

The 19th Asian Trade Promotion Forum (ATPF), organised by Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), was held on 23 and 24 February 2006.

The Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr. Edmund Ho, Secretary for Economy and Finance, Mr. Francis Tam and the Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of Central People's Government in Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr. He Xiaowei, attended the ATPF welcoming gala dinner held on 23 February. The Secretary for Economy and Finance, Mr. Francis Tam also attended the 19th ATPF opening ceremony as the main guest speaker and addressed those present.

The theme of the 19th ATPF was "New Role of TPO Era of FTA in Asia". Leaders of TPOs from 16 countries/regions were present at the Forum, expressing their views and discussing three sub-themes, namely 'Creating and Maximising Trade Opportunities for Local Enterprises under the Trade Agreement'; 'Achieving Prosperity Through Co-operation' and 'On Market Demand to TPO service in the New Era'. The Forum endorsed the International Furniture Fair Tokyo (IFFT) as the second ATPF Joint Trade Fair. Various co-operation projects were discussed such as; setting up a Business Matching PORTAL to link the websites of different TPOs, as well as the strengthening of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) co-operation among members through joint road shows, member economies also exchanged information on respective trade promotion measures and developments. It was also decided that the 20th Asian Trade Promotion Forum would be held in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

ATPF is a gathering of TPO members from Asia and Oceania Region with a total of 21 members, each year the venue of the annual meeting is rotated among the member economies. IPIM has been a member since 1999 and has been supporting and working closely with the development of ATPF.

A total of 62 delegates from 16 TPOs in the Asia and Oceania Region attended the 19th ATPF; among them were 10 TPO leaders including the Chairman of Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), Mr. Osamu Watanabe and President of IPIM, Mr. Lee Peng Hong. In addition, East Timor's Secretary of State of Council of Ministers, Mr. Gregório de Sousa, also attended the Forum as special guest.

The Ambassador of Germany to China visits IPIM

A delegation of 12 led by the Ambas sador of Germany to China, Doctor Volker Stanzel, including the Consul Generals of Germany in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hong Kong, took a study tour of Macao on 3 March 2006, with a view to holding an annual meeting "German Chiefs of Mission in China" and strengthening economic co-operation between Germany and Macao. The delegation also visited IPIM.

In order to provide the delegation with a deeper understanding of Macao's investment environment, Mr. Lee Peng Hong, President of IPIM, welcomed them in MBSC, gave a presentation and showed IPIM's new promotional video.

Official Delegation from the Czech Republic visits Macao

An official delegation from the Czech Republic visited Macao on 24 February 2006. Immediately on arriving in Macao the delegation split into two groups, one being the official delegation and the other a business delegation. Mr. Lee Peng Hong, President of IPIM, met Mr. Jaromir Drabek, President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic and a delegation of seven. The visit was aimed at strengthening their business knowledge of Macao.

Macao Business Delegation Visits Chaoshan for a Study Tour of Three Cities Jieyang, Chaozhou and Shantou

A Macao Business delegation of 40 visited three cities in Chaoshan Region for a study tour, namely Jieyang, Chaozhou and Shantou from 22-25 March. The delegation was led by Mr. Hoi Sai Iun, Chairman of Board of Directors of Macao Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Lee Peng Hong, President of IPIM, and had Mr. Lau Ngai Leung, President of Associacao dos Conterraneos de Chio Chao, Mr. Lei Loi Tak, President of Ou Mun Chio San Chong Seong Wui in the delegation with as Vice Chiefs.

The delegation arrived in Jieyang on 22 March and was welcomed by Mr. Wan Qingliang, CPC Committee Secretary and Mayor Mr. Chen Hongping attended a meeting that had been organised. During the meeting, Mr Chen explained Jieyang's economic and trade situation, bilateral co-operation prospects and indicated that the future development of Jieyang will focus on achieving a well-off society, favourable economic and social development and a great deal of co-operation between the two sides. IPIM plans to set up a Joint Liaison Office under the co-operation framework set up between IPIM and Jieyang Foreign Trade and Economic Department to strengthen bilateral economic and trade co-operation and to promote economic development.

In Chaozhou, Mr. Luo Wen Zhi, CPC Committee Secretary and representatives of the city government also organised a welcome and a meeting for the delegation. Mr. Luo laid out  Chaozhou' economic and social development and emphasised that the municipal Party committee and government was making a great effort to create a good investment environment, to improve the level and quality of services needed to attract foreign investment.

Then the delegation visited Shantou, and was received by Mr. Lin Musheng, the Vice-Governor and Secretary of Shantou CPC and Mayor Mr. Huang Zhiguang. Mr. Lin introduced the characteristics, advantages and the train of thought that have been brought to bear for the development of Shantou. The city is also hoping to make use of Macao's platform advantage to strengthen co-operation with Portuguese Speaking Countries.

A Delegation from Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation, Guangdong Visits IPIM

A delegation from the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation of Guangdong led by the Deputy Director General, Mr. Huang Yong Zhi, visited IPIM on 16 February 2006. Mr. Lee Peng Hong, The President of IPIM, welcomed them.

During the visit, Mr. Lee Peng Hong introduced Macao's economic development and the commercial co-operation that exists between Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries. Mr. Huang Yongzhi expressed the desire of Guangdong Province to develop trade relations with Portuguese-speaking countries through Macao. For this reason, The Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operationof Guangdong decided to organise a working group for a study tour of Brazil and Portugal.

Other delegates included the Director of the Bureau of Fair Trade for Import and Export, Mr. Chen Lipeng, the Director of Guangdong WTO Affairs Consultation Service Centre, Mr. Chen Qiuyan, the Deputy Director of the Guangdong Research Institute of Foreign Economic and Trade Relations, Ms. Zhang Ping, the Deputy Chief of Research Department of Guangdong WTO Affairs Consultation Service Centre, Mr. Li Xia and Section Chief of Zhuhai Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation Bureau, Mr. Liu Qun.

After the meeting, the delegation visited MBSC.

Henan Bureau of Commerce Delegation visits Macao, in order to enhance bilateral co-operation

A delegation from the Henan Bureau of Commerce, led by Deputy Director, Mr. Song Guoqing, visited IPIM on 13 March 2006. Mr. Jackson Chang, Executive Director of IPIM was on hand to welcome them.

Mr. Chang introduced Macao's current economic development, relevant statistics as well as IPIM's structure and services. Mr. Song Guoqing then explained Henan's economic progress and the development of its conference and exhibition industry. The two sides exchanged views on reinforcing economic co-operation and liaisons.

The delegation was invited to participate in the 11th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF), while IPIM was invited to take part in the "4th China Henan International Investment and Trade Fair", which will be held from 12 to 14 of April.

Delegates included the Deputy Division Chief of the Bureau, Mr. Wang Zhihang, the Chief Representative of Hong Kong Office, Mr. Wang Zhi Xin, the Director of CCPIC Henan Branch Office, Mr. Liang Jieyi and Mr. Li Qunli from Foreign Investment Promotion Division of the said Bureau.

Liaison Officers from the Pan-Pearl River Delta Co-operation Affairs Office Visit MBSC

A delegation of 26 from the PRD Co-operation Affairs Office led by Mr. Wu Huan Qiang, Councillor with the Guangdong Development and Reform Commission, visited Macao on 24 February. Ms. Echo Chan, Executive Director of IPIM, gave a brief introduction on Macao's latest economic development and IPIM's services and Mr. Sou Tim Peng, the Acting Director of Macao Economic Services, explained the current implementation of CEPA in Macao. Ideas were also exchanged on the trade and investment issues during the visit. Ms. Ieong Pou Yee, Deputy Director of Macao Economic Services and Mr. Tai Kin Ip, Acting Deputy Director of Macao Economic Services were on hand to welcome the delegation.

IPIM PARTICIPATES IN THE 11TH WAIPA WORLD INVESTMENT CONFERENCE

On behalf of IPIM, Ms. Echo Chan, Executive Director, participated in the 2006 WAIPA Annual Meeting and the 11th World Investment Conference, organised by by WAIPA, in Geneva, Stwitzerland on 8 and 9 March.

The Seminar themed "What Tomorrow Brings: The Rise of New Players and New Forms of FDI" was presided over Mr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development on FDI and Internationalisation of R&D. Nearly 260 representatives from Investment Promotion Agencies from 85 countries attended the conference and discussed the following topics: "What Tomorrow Brings: More Competition! More Benefits?", "New Actors take the Stage, Growing Importance of Developing Countries in FDI" and " New Forms and New Methods of FDI".

The WAIPA Annual Meeting was part of the Conference programme and the 2005 Annual Report was distributed, new members were introduced and the Steering Committee for 2006-2008 elected.

IPIM joined WAIPA in 2005 and looks forward to establishing connections and exchanging mutual working experience with other Trade Promotion Agencies by participating in future WAIPA's events.

CONSUL GENERAL OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL VISITS MACAO

On 9 March, 2006, Mr. Dan Ben-Eliezer, Consul General of the State of Israel - Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, paid an official visit to Macao and met with Chief Executive Mr. Edmund Ho and President of the Legislative Assembly, Ms. Susana Chou. He also visited the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and was welcomed by Mr. Lee Peng Hong, President of IPIM.Mr. Lee stated that enterprises from Israel were more than welcome to invest in Macao and use its platform to enter the China and Portuguese Speaking Countries markets.He also invited the Consul General of Israel to participate in the 11th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF), which will be held in September 2006.After the meeting, Mr. Ben-Elizer visited MBSC facilities.At present, 80 Israli companies are based in Hong Kong, of which a third are involved in high technology, and another third in diamond processing industry.

A delegation from the Guangzhou Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation visits IPIM

A delegation from the Guangzhou Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Co- operation, led by the Director General, Mr. Xiao Zhenyu, visited the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) on 8 March 2006. Mr. Lee Peng Hong, the President of IPIM, welcomed the delegation and introduced Macao's economic development and exchanged opinions on how to reinforce commercial co-operation between Macao and Guangzhou. Mr. Xiao Zhenyu discussed the investment activities between Macao and Guangzhou. He also suggested ways to enchance co-operation with Macao, such as organising forums, business visits and web links.

Delegates included the Chief of Foreign Economic Liaison Office, Mrs. Qu Meilai, Chief of Foreign Trade Development Division, Mr. Cao Zhicong, and Chief of the Foreign Economic Co-operation Division, Ms. Zhang Liping.

Monthly Luncheons organised by the Swiss Business Council in Hong Kong and the Swiss Association of Hong Kong

Invited by Mr. Francois Barras, Consul General of Switzerland in Hong Kong, Ms. Echo Chan, Executive Director of IPIM participated in one of the monthly luncheons organised by the Swiss Business Council in Hong Kong and the Swiss Association of Hong Kong on 6 March 2006 at the Hong Kong Club. During the meeting, Ms. Echo Chan as guest speaker, explained Macao's current investment environment to the gathered diners.

Mr. Thomas Ng, Senior Manager of Investor Service Department were also present at the Luncheon together with more than 20 representatives of Swiss enterprises in Hong Kong.

Delegation of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Guam visits Macao for a better understanding of local investment environment

Mr. Alfred Lam, President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Guam (CCCG), heading a delegation of 8, visited the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) on 3 March 2006. This was more than a courtesy call, because the CCCG were in Macao to do research on the investment environmen. Mr. Lee Peng Hong, President of IPIM, expressed his welcome and promised IPIM's energetic assistance to the chamber. The CCCG delegation expressed their amazement at Macao's economic growth and development.

During February and March, the following entities also organised delegations to visit Macao and IPIM:

The delegation of Xinhui of 8, led by the President of People's Political Consultative Conference of Jiangmen City Xinhui District Committee, Mr. Yin Yu Lin, visited IPIM on 2 March.

In addition, IPIM also participated / arranged for Macao entrepreneurs to took part in the following events:

"The ASAP SHOW" and "Men's Apparel Guild in California"
"The ASAP SHOW" and the "Men's Apparel Guild in California" (MAGIC) was held from 20-23 February and 21-24 February, respectively, in Las Vegas, U.S.A. IPIM organised the participation of 8 companies at ASAP and 4 companies at Magic.
